When Acne isn't Acne....

Skin Conditions That Are Shockingly Similar To Acne

Adult acne is more common than you think. But sometimes when you think that the sores and pimples on your face are just acne, the truth is much more shocking. There are many medical skin conditions that do look like acne, but in truth, they are so much more and should be treated accordingly. Some of these conditions are acne rosacea, folliculitis, perioral dermatitis, staph infections, and sebaceous hyperplasia.
If you are unfamiliar with them and how they look and feel like, the following comprehensive information on these skin conditions will guide you effectively. So, the next time you suffer from acne and redness or inflammation, you will have all the right information to identify, if your face is suffering from just acne or something more.

Acne Rosacea

It is a type of chronic adult acne that generally affects at least a third of your face, most commonly the area surrounding your nose. If an individual suffers from acne rosacea, they will experience flushing and redness in the face, fine red lines and pimples on the facial skin, swollen eyelids, conjunctivitis, and rhinophyma, i.e. enlarged and bulbous nose. Some people mistake it for sunburns or rosy cheeks, but if it is not treated effectively, the condition can worsen with time. Acne rosacea can be caused by spicy food, alcohol consumption, heat and emotional stress.

Folliculitis

Malassezia folliculitis is caused by yeast or fungi infection on the skin. Although it looks just like acne, it is much more difficult to treat. On the first look, folliculitis can look like small pimples and non-inflamed bumps that generally manifest on the forehead but can be found on other parts of the face or body. It occurs when the fungi from the Malassezia genus enters a hair follicle and infects the root, which can immediately cause inflammation. If you continue to treat it like regular acne, pus can start accumulating in the pores. The condition can worsen further if you expose your skin to hot or humid weather.

Staph Infection

Staphylococcus is a genus of bacteria that can cause a number of diseases. One of them is the staph infection that can either be caused by direct infection or due to toxins produced by the bacteria. The best way to detect staph infection on your skin is to find out if your skin is experiencing redness and inflammation in addition to boils filled with pus or pus-filled abscesses and furuncles. The area around these boils is generally swollen and sensitive to the touch and can cause pain.

Perioral Dermatitis

It is another skin condition that is quite similar to acne. In Perioral Dermatitis, the problem usually arises around the nose, chin area, and mouth. Small round shaped pustules or papules form on the skin. To find out if it is regular acne or Perioral Dermatitis, the easiest way for identification is to see if the pustules flare up after being subjected to normal acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide and exfoliators.
The area around the small papules will be quite itchy and will resemble a rash. Perioral Dermatitis is caused by the fluoride found in dental products, facial creams (that contain steroids), hormonal changes, sun exposure and heavy oils and creams. Antibiotics and medicines can also be a reason for this kind of acne, which must be treated immediately with prescription drugs and mild-cortisone creams.
These are some of the skin conditions that look a lot like acne, but in reality, they are quite different. They are caused by bacteria or viral infections and should be treated immediately with suitable medication.
